Out of Town Shopping - BlueWater, Kent

The Location of Bluewater:

Family shopping has evolved from the corner shop to the supermarket, and from the hyper market to the 'out-of-town' shopping centres. In Wales we often think of McArthur Glen, nr Bridgend but other larger scale developments include THE METRO CENTRE (Gateshead), THE TRAFFORD CENTRE (Manchester) and BLUEWATER (Kent). These havens for the shopping enthusiast have transformed shopping "from a necessity to a leisure activity in its own right."

Advantages of out-of-town retail centres:

1. Good access - often sited next to a mjor road or motorway

2. Land - often large areas of land allowing room for explansion

3. Free parking

4. Modern large shopping units - also allows a greater variety of goods to be displayed

5. Undercover - comfortable conditions for all seasons and times of day

6. Leisure facilities - cinemas, resturants and boating lakes provide additional enterntainment

7. Environmentally pleasing - water feature (fountains), trees and landscaped picnic areas

8. Cheaper land to build upon and to rent

9. Markets - the city centre is only a short drive away

10. Children friendly - creches, parks, mother and toddler parking and good security systems

Disadvantages:

Try to think of as many disadvantages as possible.
