What a week for the Welsh!

Wales in the News May 2012.

This week, 80% of beaches in Wales have been awarded the prestigious BLUE FLAG award for water quality and beach cleanliness.

In addition, this Saturday (5th May) Wales will officially become the first country in the world to open up a coastal footpath around its entire coastline!

The 870 mile stretch will take in 2 National Parks, 3 AONB's (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), National heritage sites, country parks, river estuary's and of course major settlements.

See BBC news for full story here

See map of the path above for the zones.

Opposition, while ramblers and environmentalists are excited by the news there are some groups opposed to the scheme:

  • The travellers at Rover Way, Cardiff who are concerned that walkers will see into their caravans.
  • Local landowners such as farmers and home owners with uninterrupted views of the sea.
  • Health and safety experts who fear over crumbling cliffs.
